I have been living in Hillsborough, NC outside Chapel Hill for over twenty years. I live in the woods on the edge of a meadow with ponds, streams and gardens with walking paths. This is my home where I do my art, run my business and have been the companion to many wonderful dogs.
I became a feminist in the 70’s and DC was a great place to be a radical feminist; the Women’s Center, Lammas Bookstore, Food For Thought restaurant, Off Our Backs newspaper and so many vibrant, active women. Eventually my trajectory as a feminist became not only about equality for women, but to include animal rights. This code of ethics informs my art and my daily choices.
My artwork flows from what moves me and where I find beauty; women, animals, the earth, color, pattern and light. Inherent in my imagery is my deep respect and love for animals and the earth.
My primary focus has been painting, drawing and sculpting in papier-mâché. I have written, illustrated and self-published three children’s books in the Dear Savannah Blue series. They were inspired by the friendship between my Great Dane, Savannah Blue, and my niece Calla Ruth, my sister Amy’s daughter. I have created several coloring books for adults within The Coloring Book for Big Girls series. I have also made blank illustrated journals, notecards and a divination deck. My work has been published as book covers and interior illustrations, within magazines, newspapers, calendars and as note cards. I have been in wonderful collaborations with well-know writers Mary Daly, Patricia Monaghan, Eleanor Gadon and Caroline Gage to name a few.
